I understand that many artists put a lot of time and money into making pieces for the contest, and I really can't fault them for wanting to recoup some of that expense, especially if they have seconds sitting around.
Just curious what you guys do with them. Do they sit around the shop for years collecting dust? Do you only sell them at shows or to friends as not to upset the ABC contest auction winners?
I wonder if there would be a market for the informal sale of seconds/duplicates from the ABC contest on this board?
How do you collectors feel about seeing a marble (duplicate) you won at the ABC auction selling at a later time?
With any of the murrine guys, it is a given that they will make more marbles with that murrine. Considering the time that goes into making one murrine, you can't expect them to destroy all the remaining cane, unless of course you want to pay them several thousand dollars to do so (for the high end murrine artist, and considerably less for the lessor murrine makers), then I am sure they will reconsider.
Should artist let people know seconds of similiar or same design, or duplicates, will be made available for sale after the ABC auction? Of course doing so would probably lower the ABC auction prices.
Should artists do what Margaret Zinser did, notify Brian that this will be the only marble made in this design? Doing so would lead the buyer to assume that if artist does not make that statement, that similiar/same designs may turn up for sale at a later time?
Of course, a certain premium as the actual ABC contest marble should be expected, I usually value that addition to the price at $25-$100, depending on the artist and marble.
Again, me personally, I have never had an issue (this year or past years) with any artist I have purchased from in the ABC contest and their selling of seconds/duplicates/revisions. But based on what some of the marbles went for this year, I wonder if the same can be said from other buyers.
Just some random thoughts.
Scott
