I found this marble under the wrong category on ebay several-many years ago. I absolutely love the colors, the heavy
seed like core, and the orange transparent glass. I listed it as being in my top ten one time and "clueless in CA" asked me to explain. LOL! I
finally got around to giving it the attention that it deserves. Have a great fall!

WOW Craig, that really is stunning, I can understand why it's a fav. Even though I don't think of orange as one of my favorite colors, I notice that I
have many marbles that are orange and I always seem to enjoy it.

Craig, you continue to amaze me with your photography.
No question the marble is technically terrific from core joy to smart surface design. I am loving the lighting that is everywhere and not there at all in reflection. There is strong enough light to cast shadows on the core, yet no reflections. Even on the lutz you got color and tonal variation. How'd you do that? Talk about technique! Wow. Brian, does it seem that the more technical marbles fall short of pure beauty? Interesting and amazing but not beautiful. Does a beautiful marble have fewer
elements? Is it possible to have many elements and be beautiful? I think that if I made a top ten list I would have a mix of beauty and marbles that had a
little more going on in trems of construction. I also appreciate it when a marble has those time honored constuction basics... a core and ribbons. It's
a wonderful combination and it's alright to repeat it. I like the connection between contemp and vintage German marbles.
Shelton I guess I am looking for a formula that I think works everytime. I still think that each marble requires a little different placement, or location to take a picture. It just seems to me that there should be a set of conditions that always works. I think it's fun to share the joy that we find in our collections. It's just my thing to play with images. It's a creative outlet. Sometimes I remove the hotspot with Photoshop. Do you miss the hotspot? Does something seem not right?

There's also a huge difference in the construction of furnace made marbles and torchworked marbles. Some collectors seem to fall more heavily on one side
or the other. While not crazy complex, I still see 20 plus pieces of cane in there! And your photography is superb!

With the practice theme in the title, then the discussion of technical aspects and complexity within the simple initial look, Sumi-e painting came to mind.
The beauty of simplicity and all the practice and the technical approaches it took to make it that way.

Oops, I see how my statement could have been offensive, implying that furnace swirls aren't as technical as some torch-worked marbles. I apologize for
that, after thinking about it, I think I was offbase in making that comment. I certainly do appreciate furnace-worked marbles, and love them in my collection.
In thinking about it more, I think it would be better to say that I'm not as much of a color person as some, although I also like the super colorful marbles as well. I just tend to REALLY enjoy the more ethereal look of some of the boro work, as I can never get enough of fuming and the different colors that the silvers and golds produce. I just love that earthy stuff. Beyond that, I love the precision of rattys and wigwags and pinwheeling and that sort of stuff. I love the designs. Wait until you see these new marbles I got from Travis. Marbles that just cause the synapses of the brain to melt and fuse together, incredible stuff. I also love the detail of the more complex murrine that some of the guys produce. To me, it's amazing to see these things in glass. It's just a personal preference though - I certainly also love the classic swirls and such, and as I've told Craig several times, his love for these marbles has REALLY heightened my appreciation for them as well, as he continues to present them to us in all their glory and technical mastery, etc. So again, sorry about that other comment, I was more talking about my preferences, and it was poorly stated. (Sorry Craig, there I go apologizing again. Crap, just did it again as well. Ha ha haaa.) Thanks gang....Brian |

You can still pick up a beautiful John Hamon Miller or a Jim Davis marble (not quite antique category but of great historical significance in marble making) on Ebay. It is very nice to have a few marbles from that time period to see how far contemporary marbles have come and how the "pioneers" were experimenting. As with most contemporary marbles, they are far more beautiful in hand than the ebay photographs show. Roger's photography is the closest thing to rea life accurate I have ever seen with the John Hamon Miller and Jim Davis marbles. Becky |

Becky and Craig, thank you both very much for your advice and tips. I am very grateful that you are taking the time to help me to grow in my appreciation and
understanding of marbles and as a result I am getting more joy out of collecting. I am so pleased I joined this board and wish now that I got round to it
sooner rather than just "lurking" around in it.
Becky, you are spot on, I am in total agreement with what you are saying. I looked on e-bay and thought the puple/pinky Miller marble that Infraredcoupe is selling is beautiful, but alas US bidders only! arrrgh. I will do as Craig suggested and keep looking out for another one that moves me and hopefully in time I can add a few to my collection. Craig, wow! thats a really nice antique one you have there. I like that a lot, thanks for sharing. The ones I have bought are similar except they dont have a solid core, they have orange, white and yellow latticinios instead. They were posted 1st class yesterday, so with a bit of luck they should arrive today. I will post some pics so you can see them and maybe you can tell me what you think.

Well they have arrived and here is the pic. Sorry not up to your high standard Craig, but with all the practice in the world I will never be that good! Think
you can just about get the general idea of what I have though. The seller included an ordinary well played with newer marble for comparison purposes only, and
I have included this in the pic.
So what do you think for a first purchase? Did I choose some nice ones or is there a lot better out there? What should I be looking out for? This is all
new territory for me so any advice welcome! I like the one on the top row far right the best, although I find it odd that all the outer bands are blue and
white except one which is red and white. Why would this be? Is there a particular reason for it? I must say I am very impressed with the condition, like you
said Craig, I was expecting some hit marks etc, but these are no where near as bad as I was expecting. Sure they all have hit marks and one has a fairly large
chip but I must say that the well played with newer marble is in far worse condition! These look like they have certainly been played with, but not too much.
I like them and am pleased to have bought them, but I think I will be sticking mainly to my contemps! Marbles sure have come a long way. Like you say though
Becky, its nice to have a few historical marbles in the collection.

I can definitely help you out with ideas on how to fill the bowl from the glass addict perspective. I think a wide variety of pee-wee contemps (anything under an inch) would look smashing in that bowl mixed right along with the antiques. It will be eclectic but fascinating. It is like having a mini marble collection condensed into a tiny space. I have mine right by the kitchen sink and near the window so I can enjoy them in nice lighting while I wash dishes. Yes, I have an old fashioned kitchen. I do the dishes by hand and the pre-wash rinsing cycle is performed by Dolly the dog with her tongue ... OR another idea for your bowl is you could begin your collection of small glass spinning tops which I have found to be quite a fun thing to collect. I call it my kinetic art grouping ...
